The most common cause of hand and arm injuries is accidents at work through the operation of machinery.
Sometimes employers do not maintain machinery properly or safety guards are removed and serious injury to arms and hands can result as a consequence.
The hand in particular is a complex arrangement of a large number of bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles and nerves and hand injuries can be extremely debilitating.
They can also take a great deal of time to heal properly and extensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy is required often the intervention of aids and appliances is necessary to correct the injury done to the hand.
Repetitive Strain Injury
The hand or arm may also sustain an injury caused by repetitive over use. Commonly known as RSI – Repetitive Strain Injury.
This does not involve a single incident or accident but this injury results from the constant use of the hand or arm in a repetitive manner over a long period.
Any injury to the hand or arm should be treated seriously and medical attention should be obtained as soon as possible. If trauma has been sustained, it is important to obtain x-rays or MRI Scans to evaluate the extent of the injury.
